Lakecrest Independent School Parent Newsletter

September 8, 2017

The end of the first week is drawing to a close and it was marked by many highlights to kick-start the 2017-2018 academic year into gear. We have welcomed our Kindergarten, Grade 10 and new Lakecrest families into the school community and enjoyed a busy week of getting to know each other and establishing our regular routines. All students commemorated the fresh start at Lakecrest by painting a rock to illustrate the ideas of growth, peace or international student population, and then adding their individual pieces to the wonderful rock feature at the front of the school. We ended the week with a BBQ to celebrate our first as a K-10 school. Our wonderful Home and School Association organized the BBQ and Grade 10 students helped to serve the hotdogs.

House Keeping Items

  • Please remove outdoor shoes on entry to the school.
  • Wednesday long lunch (11:50am-12:50pm) takes place every week. Students may be collected by a family member and go out for lunch.
  • Adults who are visiting Lakecrest should sign in on entry to the school.
  • School lunches begin on Monday, September 11th.

Parent Parking

Please use the parking lot across the road from Lakecrest School when dropping off or collecting your child. Parents are not permitted to park by the cross walk directly outside of school as it poses a tremendous risk to our students and parents when using the crosswalk.

Extra Curricular Activities

We are still in the process of securing new activities with outside organizations and appreciate your patience with the timetable release. It will be published next week.

Lakecrest Xtreme Hockey

REGISTRATION IS NOW UNDERWAY and letters were sent home today with students. The final date to register is September 20th.

Lakecrest Instrumental Lessons

A letter has been sent home with students today regarding instrumental lessons on offer at Lakecrest. Please complete and return a form to book your child’s place with an instrumental teacher.

Star Student Award Assemblies

Grades K-6 will continue to have Star Student award assemblies and PYP class assemblies. This year, parents will be contacted to attend an assembly when their child is receiving their award certificate. In addition, parents will be invited to watch their child in their class assembly. Grades 7-10 will have separate assemblies that focus on more age- appropriate concepts.

Grades 7-10 Home /school communication Website

Please see the below link for the website for parents, teachers and students of Grades 7-10. This site provides regular updates regarding homework and important communication about school events.

Visitors to Lakecrest

All adults who enter the school building are asked to please check in at the reception desk. For safety purposes, visitors should sign in on arrival. Please speak with Ms Gillingham if you urgently need to communicate with a teacher and she can make the contact for you. Alternatively, for non-urgent matters, contact your child’s homeroom teacher via email.

This excursion has been confirmed for Monday, October 2nd– Tuesday October 3rd. All students from Grades 7-10 are invited on this trip and more information will follow next week from Ms. Carroll.

Library Notice

Please see below for a message from Ms. Reid-Paul.

    Looking For Volunteers!!!

Dear Lakecrest Parents;

I am looking for volunteers to help with the shelving and cataloguing of books in our library.  Neither of these jobs is difficult, just thirty minutes or an hour of your time each week will make a big difference. It is a lovely atmosphere to work in and can be done while you wait for your child before long lunch or at the end of the day. There is a lot of flexibility around when you can volunteer.

If you feel that you are able to offer help this year, no matter how small, it would be much appreciated and you would be helping maintain a wonderful new learning space for your child. Please contact me at my email address if you are able to offer your time and let me know the days and times you can help out.

Kind regards,

Sherry Reid-Paul

Library Coordinator
