Founded in 1993, Lakecrest has been providing students with an exceptional education, a love of learning, the ability to think independently, and the confidence to reach their goals for 30 years.

Located in the heart of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, we offer small class sizes with one-on-one attention and a safe and nurturing environment for Kindergarten to Grade 9. Our thorough, well-planned program is coupled with French instruction and a variety of other activities including music, art, and sports. Our caring faculty and staff work with parents to form a close-knit community in support of all students. Our current student population is 150 students with an average class size of 15. Approximately one-third of our families have come to St. John’s from different locations in the international oil industry including the United States, England, Scotland, and Norway, among others. A significant portion of our students are from families hailing from parts of the globe such as India, Australia, Nigeria, United Kingdom, and Egypt, creating a rich and diverse community from which has created a vibrant school culture with a focus on learning and international mindedness.

Lakecrest is governed by a Board of Directors elected from among the parents of the school and interested community members. The Head of School, as well as the Home & School Association, have status on the Board.

Canadian Accredited Independent Schools

Lakecrest is accredited by CAIS, which is the preeminent organization of accredited independent schools in Canada dedicated to educational excellence, school improvement, and organizational leadership.

Lakecrest is the only school in Newfoundland and Labrador which has successfully achieved accreditation provincially, nationally with Canadian Accredited Independent Schools, and internationally as a Primary Years Program International Baccalaureate World School. As a result, Lakecrest provides for students the most progressive and well-researched curriculum and teaching available.

International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization provides a program of studies for students from Kindergarten to Grade Twelve. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland this organization coordinates, supports and accredits schools in Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. There are currently 288 IB world schools in Canada

Lakecrest Independent School currently has the IB Primary Years Program (PYP).

The PYP provides enrichment for all students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, regardless of their academic standing.

Lakecrest focuses on the development of learning attitudes and behaviors. The International Baccalaureate student learning profile is constantly reinforced by all teachers and administration.

Lakecrest Classrooms

Lakecrest provides opportunities for students in the same class to reach for different levels of accomplishment depending on their interests and strengths in an academic area – a personalized education. The class sizes are small to ensure that all students receive an equal portion of teacher/student time.

Lakecrest students explore topics which are part of the provincial curriculum with greater depth of treatment and apply ideas to international themes.

Lakecrest Parents

Parents whose children attend Lakecrest have made a strong commitment to their child’s education. There is a culture of similar student academic and personal development expectations throughout the parent and student body. Parents partner with teachers to provide the best experience for each student.

We think of the Lakecrest community as a family. Through the Home & School Association, parents can get involved with their child’s school.

Lakecrest Educators

Lakecrest teachers are highly trained and qualified. In addition to post-secondary teacher certification teachers have had ongoing national and international professional development. As a result, the most current well-researched pedagogy and training is provided for teachers. There are also weekly collaborative meetings of Lakecrest teachers as well as major workshop opportunities in other cities. This ensures that all students have the opportunity to be enriched and achieve their best.

Teaching strategies used by teachers focus on how important it is for students to have the opportunity to build on what they know and then use new learning experiences to construct new knowledge and understandings.

Only teachers from IB accredited schools are permitted to attend the international workshop sessions which offer the best ongoing professional development opportunities available in the world. Our professional development resource base for teachers is national and international, as well as provincial.
