  <title>Parent Information Letter #17</title>
  <link> http://www.lakecrest.ca/index.php?p=news&amp;nid=1128</link>
  <description>
    Parent Information Letter #17                                                       January 30, 2012

Extracurricular Activities for Term 2

A summary of regularly scheduled extracurricular activities for the second term is attached to this notice Please review this form with your child and feel free to sign up for those which are of interest. As mentioned in the previous letter, various other activities particularly in the area of athletics and orchestral music will be communicated to parents during the semester as the schedule is developed. This form is also available on our website.

School Crossing Guard

In recent discussions with the City of St. John’s staff it has been mentioned that they are having difficulty finding a replacement for morning crossing guard duty in front of our school. As mentioned several weeks ago the former crossing guard left the position to pursue further education. I have asked the city to continue to do its best to find a replacement, and they have requested that I ask the parents of Lakecrest if there is anyone who would be willing to be trained and certified to do this task at the school each morning. We are also checking with some neighbourhood possibilities to see if there is any interest from someone who lives close to the school. I have attached a City of St. John’s flyer which is used to advertise for these positions. If any parent or acquaintance of a parent is interested in this position they are asked to please contact the City as indicated on the flyer.
In the meantime we do regularly remind our students of the importance of using caution when using the cross walk particularly in the morning when there is no guard present. Students should come to a full stop and check both ways before stepping into the crosswalk and then carefully begin to cross only when vehicles have stopped. We will continue to reinforce this message regularly in the coming months.

Parking, Drop off and Pick up

The Spa across the street from the school has requested that we do not park in their driveway when we are dropping off or picking up students. Also just a reminder that the front of the school is a “no stopping” zone for much of the time when students are being dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoon. Maintaining required sightlines in front of the school during these busy times of the day is important for student safety.

 Orchestra Sectional Registration Forms

On Monday students who had already completed forms indicating their interest in the Lakecrest School Orchestra received information which details the instrument choice options for students. We hope that sectional practices/classes will be starting in the next few weeks. Parents and students are asked to please complete and return these forms by Friday, Feb. 3. On Friday the forms will be distributed to any other students who would like to join the school orchestra.

  <title>Kindergarten 2012/13 Orientation Session #3</title>
  <link> http://www.lakecrest.ca/index.php?p=news&amp;nid=1127</link>
  <description>
    January 25, 2012
Dear Parents,
Our third Kindergarten 2012 orientation is scheduled for Friday, February 3rd in the Kindergarten room (Room 105) starting at 9:00 a.m. Once the session begins, we will ask parents to leave the children with Ms. Lethbridge for the hour. This third session will include approximately a half hour with Ms. Warren our music teacher.
At 9:15, a thirty minute session will be provided for parents who would like additional information about our International Baccalaureate Kindergarten Program and how it links to our provincial program of studies. Questions about other general aspects of Lakecrest are also welcomed. The session will also provide for parents a preliminary overview of the complete kindergarten to grade six program. The kindergarten program will then be discussed in more detail at our evening orientation session later in March.
If you have any questions regarding this session or about the school, please feel free to contact us at 738-1212 or you can email us at mlethbridge@lakecrest.ca or rpittman@lakecrest.ca.
We look forward to meeting you and your child again next Friday.
Sincerely,
Bob Pittman Michelle Lethbridge Ros O’Leary

  <title>7,8,9 Exam Schedule Update January 22</title>
  <link> http://www.lakecrest.ca/index.php?p=news&amp;nid=1126</link>
  <description>
    Because Lakecrest was closed Friday 20th Jan, our exam timetable was shifted forward as expected. This means that exams will conclude on Wednesday morning this week, and students will be permitted to go home for the PM session as was previously planned for the last day of exams. Students will now of course remain for their French Tutorial on Tuesday and for those who wish their supervised study session in the afternoon. We have had to make arrangements with Memorial University to provide their Career development session for grade 8 and 9 students at another time.
Thanks for your understanding  </description>

  <title>Parent Information Letter #16, January 19, 2012</title>

  <description>
    Parent Information Letter #16                                                       January 19, 2012

Grade 7-9 Mid-Year Exams weather related delays
As mentioned in exam guidelines already distributed to students and posted on our website, if there is a delay in exams due to a weather related school closure, all exams will be moved forward. The timetable schedule will not change but all remaining exams will “shift” forward one day.
Grade 7, 8 and 9 students over the last several weeks have been provided with several documents which contain exam information. These include exam and tutorial session schedules, regulations, writing tips, and general guidelines. Supervision and supervised study sessions are provided, but 7,8 and 9 students may study at home in the afternoon with parent permission.
On Tuesday, January 24th, the last day of exams 7, 8, and 9 students will not be required to remain after 12:00 and will be permitted to go home. Classes will resume as usual on Wednesday, January 25th.

Orchestral Music Program
On Friday past Lakecrest was pleased to have Dr. Peter Gardiner and a group of 7 other musicians from the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra provide a special session for all grade 3-9 students. This session provided students with examples of pieces played by the musicians individually and in small groups. Much information was provided for students and with that came the most interesting questions from our students about the instruments and musicians. We hope that this exposure will help interested students in the selection of their instruments for the school orchestra group. Parents and / or students who are interested in involvement in the orchestral music program and did not submit the first form in November may obtain one at any time from the school office. All parents who have already submitted forms in November to express interest in any instrument will be contacted to obtain this additional information and make arrangements for the beginning of the sectional sessions in the next few days.

Extracurricular Activities for Term 2
Extracurricular activities for students will be starting on Monday, February 6th. Registration forms will be sent home next week and parents/students will be able to select from various activities as usual.
In addition ongoing activities such as skating and hockey on Wednesdays, basketball and other athletic activities, continue as indicated directly on the school monthly calendar. Some of the athletic activities will begin at various times during the second semester so as to coincide with the usual schedule of sports in schools. Ms. King will keep parents updated as these sports become available during the semester.

NL Department of Health Immunization Form for grade 4 and 9 students
Parents of grade 4 and 9 students are asked to please return the Department of Health Immunization Form to the school by Monday, January 23. Parents may elect to consent to, or refuse the immunization on the form, however all students are asked to return it to the Department through the school.

Upcoming Teacher In-service Days
During the month of February teachers will work toward the completion of a three year action plan which will outline the development of the International Baccalaureate program. This program is currently focused on development in grade kindergarten to six classes, but also affects the direction of all grade levels in the school. Thus on February 10th and 24th teachers will complete a study of required IB school educational standards. This will then lead to the development of a proposal which will outline actions and direction for the continued development of Lakecrest curriculum, teaching strategies, and student school wide learning results. Thus there will be no school for students on February 10th as indicated on the school calendar, and February 24th. We thank parents for their understanding of the time required to complete this task.
